Is it legal to do this?
To haul your suv in the back of a rented u-haul or penske truck? we are moving from Nashville, TN to Dothan, AL and my husband seems to think that if we rent a 26′ truck and pack it with our belongings that we are legally allowed to drive our SUV into the left over space in the back of the rental truck. I don’t think it is legal or safe but we are arguing over it anyway and he seems to think that it is a great idea! Could someone please stop our argument? Thanks
As long as you do not exceed the weight limits of the truck, and the vehicle is secured, there is no law prohibiting it.
It doesn’t sound very safe. Make no sudden stops!

First off look at the cargo weight limit. These vehicles can only haul so much weight, and an SUV is heavier then your normal belongs. IF you would still be under the weight limit, then it goes to the next question of whether or not you’d be allowed to. You are responsible for what you put in the truck and they take no responsibility for the damage. So do you think you could put the SUV back there and not damage anything in the truck? If you think that would be ok and still want to try it then ask Uhaul, or whoever you rent from. It may be against their policies as well.
ADD: Cha Ching a CAR HAULER isn’t the same as a UHaul.

It would be legal so long as it was properly secured. You might wish to REMOVE the gas tank first as it is a fire hazard. Empty it and leave it open for a couple of days to let the fumes escape, then stow it separately.

First of all, look at the Vehicle Codes of all the states (presumably TN and AL) through which you will drive. You are responsible for obeying all traffic laws. Try calling local police agencies of cities/counties/parishes through which you will travel, and ask this question in short, concise form. See what answers you get. You may not always get the same answer, because police officers are often just like anyone else on these matters…it is a judge who ultimately decides.
Most law enforcement agencies expect you to use some common sense when it comes to vehicle safety.
One more thing: check you rental contract and make sure you do not violate the terms of it. It may forbid you from transporting objects (including vehicles) that exceed a gross total weight.

No you can’t do that. They’re not made for transporting cars. You can however rent a tow bar and pull it behind the Uhaul. Good luck and be careful.

Edit, there are weigh stations and if you get caught they will impound your vehicle. Don’t do it.
The ramps provided for these trucks are only about 3 foot wide. How will you get the car inside the truck? It cannot be done unless if you have a loading dock available. Uhaul and penske both rent vehicle tow trailers that can be attached to the back of thir rental trucks. Tell your husbnad to stop being cheap and rent one or he will regret not having rented it. He will spend more in gas hauling it in the truck than to drag it behind the truck. The gas saved alone will cover the rental of the tow trailer.

I don’t know about it being legal but it sure sounds stupid as hell, LOL. When I moved across state I actually rented a car hauler through U-haul. But you all having a SUV it might weigh too much for the hauler. I would check with U’haul or Penske to see if their equipment can hold the weight of your SUV. Also try the last source link, the trans porting car website they charge but I am not sure of the price range. When all else fails one of you could drive the car to Alabama.
