How do people in NYC move furniture without a car?

For example, when we move to Manhattan this summer, we may want to buy furniture items off Craigslist – but we’re also planning to give up our cars when we move. Will we have to rent a U-Haul truck just to move what will mostly likely be a cheaper item than the Truck Rental?

I’ll go a little off-topic.

Give up your cars – but don’t give up your license.

Before it expires, take the written NYS test.

You could decide later to rent a car…or you could decide to move out of NYC. If so, all you’d have to do is take the written test in your new state, not the driving test.

I lived in NYC for years, held my license, kept renewing. Didn’t have a car.

When I moved to NJ, before it expired I took the written test only. Depending on where you live in NJ, it’s virtually mandatory to drive. Naturally not so in NY.

Just something to consider. Whatever you decide – good luck in your new home.

You can hire a moving company – if you rent a uhaul, you will need a vehicle to go and get the uhaul ansd to get you to the new location; I would suggest selling one vehicle and keeping the other, if you can afford it ( have heard that some parts of NY are very difficult to find parking & people will rent garage space per month )

    Well you can

    1. Hire a car and uhaul trailer
    2. Hire a truck or van
    3. Use a variety of moving services, which means they carry your furniture up and down stairs for you.
    4. Use a delivery company, that will deliver say a sofa or table.

If you still have your driver’s license, you can rent a rental truck or van from U-Haul. Now, you don’t need a large truck to move furniture, just a small or medium size truck will do. Believe it will work.

    Good luck

While you’re on Craigslist and after you choose your furniture, stay there and go to the "labor and moving" section. You can also try a search for "man with van," and you’ll find plenty of people who will do it for a reasonable price. Much cheaper, that is, than renting a truck or using a regular moving company.

Also, for smaller items you can call a regular car service of the type you’d normally use just to move people. You can request a van or SUV with most of those if necessary.

And one more option, rent a car. Besides the traditional rental companies, Zipcar rents by the day or hour and has cars of various sizes, including compact SUVs available all around the city. You have to sign up and become a member first but once you do that you just reserve a car by phone or the web and go pick it up from a lot or garage near you:
